Flipping The Birds

Let’s talk about them O’s!

Ron Burr's avatarcharmcitysportsguy

Don’t worry, this post will be safe for work…

The Orioles have officially played 1/3 of the regular season and they have surprisedprettymucheverypundit (and if you are honest more than a few of the fans) by being at or near the top of the standings in the AL East since Game 1. Right now Dan Duquette is probably looking for pieces to add but it is quite possible that could change as we head into the dog days of summer, especially if the starting pitching cannot get back on track.

Bunny Fezzik This is how we spend “our” days. And most other days too…

The O’s showed a commitment to keeping their contention window open by re-signing Chris Davis & Darren O’Day, but they have more work to do. Namely, signing Manny Machado long-term and getting some starting pitching. Machado is a transcendent talent, a once-in-a-generation talent. He…

Cutting The Cord Diaries – The Decision

We’re cutting the cord of cable, join us on the journey!

belleburr's avatarPop Culture Uncovered

By Ron and Belle

Starting this week, Ron and I will be doing a bi-monthly segment on the trials and tribulations of cutting the cord, what we found to be easy and what was frustrating beyond belief. We’re documenting this in the hopes that it’ll help others out there who are looking to get the most bang for their buck and want to pare down unnecessary expenses.

Join us on this rollercoaster ride!

Belle:

For the last few years we’ve watched as our DirecTV bill has gone up, and up, and up. Yes, we’d get deals but those hidden fees would creep in, slowly but surely. After doing some research: here, here and here we decided to take the plunge and cut the cord. I’ve been pushing for it for sometime now, as I personally only watch a few shows live, only a fewshows on cable, sports…

Mississippi Muddled Pie

Ron Burr covers Mississippi’s recent bill for PCU!

Ron Burr's avatarPop Culture Uncovered

Recently, Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant signed HB 1523, or theProtecting Freedom of Conscience from Government Discrimination Actinto law. The law allows government employees and businesses to deny housing, jobs, adoption and foster care services to those who they feel violate their morality as well as allowing physicians and other medical professionals to deny provision of care for the same reasons.

Bryant said the law was an attempt to prevent government interference in people’s lives:“This bill does not limit any constitutionally protected rights or actions of any citizen of this state under federal or state laws,” he said. “It does not attempt to challenge federal laws, even those which are in conflict with the Mississippi Constitution, as the Legislature recognizes the prominence of federal law in such limited circumstances.”

PCU is live on the scene in Mississippi to gauge the reactions of everyday citizens to…

@arrpeebee covers what you SHOULDN’T eat at the ballpark!

Ron Burr's avatarPop Culture Uncovered

It’s Opening Day, also known as the only day that baseball fans in Miami or San Diego can say they are in first place (at least until they play). For those of us that love baseball this is one of the greatest days of the year. For those who are not big baseball fans however there needs to be something to look forward to other than insanely overpriced beer and grotesquely oversized fans, and what is better than bat shit crazy ballpark food? Here’s some of the best that MLB ballparks are offering new for 2016:

MLB

This is Houston’s Sweet Potato Chicken Waffle Sandwich. Looks good, but it’s grilled chicken, Greek yogurt, and I see fresh tomato and spinach. I expect more from my ballpark food, especially from Houston, which is synonymous with big fat people eating slow smoked brisket. Your ballpark is named after cheap instant lemonade mix for…

Teletubbies – In Live Action!

HOLLYWOOD — The Teletubbies are coming to the big screen.

The RPB Group, after rigorous negotiations with the BBC, is moving forward with a live-action film focusing on the origins of the iconic characters. The project, targeted for release in 2018, would mark the first big screen outing for the astro-turf dwelling aliens: Tinky Winky, Dipsy, Laa-Laa, Po and their friend Noo-Noo.

Orange Ball Pictures former chief marketing officer Elizabeth Milillo is producing the new pic alongside Michael Gaskin, who produced the 2015 revival for the BBC.  Pierson Whewell, Augustus DelValle, William McKinley and Rainbow Lee are exec producing the film.

It’s been a long slow road to acceptance for us geeks. Years of ridicule and marginalization, wedgies and swirlies and generally being relegated to the background. But then, slowly, we began to break through…

I think it started when Samuel L. Jackson said in an interview he was a comic book fan. It was a moment of validation for us. The guy whose wallet said “Bad Mother Fucker” on it was into comics. No one was going to give Sam Jackson a wedgie, not unless they wanted to enter a world of pain.

Then Lord of The Rings came out to universal praise and HUGE box office numbers. Now the D&D / sword & sorcery crowd had something to brag about. All of a sudden all the cool kids were talking about…

Friday Fright Night – Scream

Our very own @BelleBurr takes a look back at Scream!

belleburr's avatarPop Culture Uncovered

Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson’s homage to Psycho and Craven’s own movies, Scream is the self-referential horror movie that started a franchise.

Everything seemingly begins with Drew Barrymore’s adorable Casey getting the world’s worst prank call. Before too long Casey and her boyfriend, Steve, end up dead as hell and we’re off to the races.

This opening scene of the movie sets the tone for the rest of the film: cheerful with colors that are almost candy bright, but increasingly dark as the smoke from Casey’s forgotten popcorn fills the house, obscuring everything and making it impossible for her to see where the danger is coming from. As Casey’s terrorized by Ghostface her night in becomes not just her nightmare but the worst case scenario for anyone who’s ever been home alone.

One of the most quotable movies ever, Williamson’s script is snappy, hilarious and terrifying all at once. Aided by…

Sting and the WWE HOF Debate

belleburr's avatarPop Culture Uncovered

By Ron Burr

This week Sting was announced as the first inductee into the 2016 Class of the WWE Hall of Fame. This has caused some consternation with a small but dedicated section of wrestling fans because the vast majority of Sting’s wrestling career (and the entirety of his time as a legitimate championship contender) was in the NWA/WCW. Scanning the message boards (pro tip: never do this before coffee) I’d say it was 90% happy for Sting, 5% disagreeing with the choice, and 5% complaining about HHH’s ego. As for me, I’m fine with it. I think it is 100% appropriate. Why? Let me tell you:

Even though he wasn’t there, Sting had a huge impact on the WWE

I am a grizzled veteran of the Monday Night Wars. I was on the front lines with a beer in one hand and the remote control in the other, my thumb…
